Mildred is a library dedicated to chunky graphics. Chunky graphics
displays (like those on PCs and Amiga graphics cards) represent
an image using one byte (or more) per pixel. This is unlike Amiga
native graphics modes where an image is represented by using one
bit per pixel, and using a number of separate layers (bitplanes)
and then combining those to get the colour for that pixel.
Chunky graphics modes tend to be faster than bitplane modes when
there are a lot of colours on screen, and as they take full
advantage of graphics cards (which are also more powerful than the
Amigas native graphics chipset) this is the way forward in displays.
Its everything you could probably want for doing chunky graphics: blitting, scrolling, pixel animation, fading, chunky to planar conversion, processor optimised routines and a lot more besides. It is incredilbly powerful, although this power comes at the expense of size. The library itself is 130kbytes. However, this is well worth it. The library number of Mildred clashes with that of Mikes map library, but you should change the library number of the map library, as it is far less common. The MiniMildred library contains only a subset of the commands, the chunky to planar commands. If you are using the Mildred library, you should not install the MiniMildred library as well, as some of the commands overlap. However, as Mildred contains MiniMildred, you will never need to have both installed at the same time. Both libraries are freely available to use in your own games (commercial or otherwise), although the libraries are no longer being developed by the author. It should be noted that he has given up programming, not just the development of this library, however, he may still respond to queries about it. The library archive contains the library and a new version of the makedeflibs program, which can handle the larger library size. There is also an extended archive which contains everything from the Mildred Support Site, and is 1.8Mb in size. If you want to download some of the Mildred material, visit our large Mildred section. |
